SEANews – International Service-The new Syrian government has announced the cancellation of the management and operation contract for the port of Tartus with the Russian company STG Stroytransgaz. This contract, signed in 2019 by the government of Bashar al-Assad, allowed the Russian company to manage the strategic port for 49 years. The company had also committed to investing $500 million in the development of Tartus port’s infrastructure.

According to Al-Watan newspaper, the decision was made after the Russian company failed to meet its obligations under the contract.

Tartus port is Syria’s second-largest port and one of the country’s most important commercial and logistical hubs. It also hosts Russia’s only naval base in the Mediterranean, playing a key role in Moscow’s military and economic strategies in the region.

According to published reports, two Russian cargo ships, Sparta 2 and Sparta, have recently entered the port of Tartus. Satellite images also show the presence of at least three Russian warships near the port. These developments have fueled speculation about Russia’s efforts to withdraw equipment or reduce its military presence in Syria.

The cancellation of this contract could signal a shift in the new Syrian government’s policies regarding economic and political cooperation with Moscow. This move might affect strategic relations between Russia and Syria and challenge Russia’s economic presence in the country.
