Maersk: We Have Lost About 20% of Our Maritime Transport Capacity

Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi in Yemen, has declared in his latest statement that operations in the Red Sea will intensify significantly. In response to these remarks, Maersk has announced that the incursion of the Houthis has reached areas further from their access zone.

According to CN News, Maersk International Shipping Company has stated that as a result of escalating tensions in the Red Sea region, their navigation costs have increased.

They state that due to the increase in “danger zones” in the area, approximately 15% to 20% of maritime transport capacity has been lost due to the unstable situation in the Red Sea.

This situation has led to increased congestion of vessels, delays in cargo delivery, and shortages of equipment and capacity. In order to protect their crew and cargo, Maersk has been forced to reroute their transport routes through alternate paths, which has resulted in a 40% increase in fuel consumption for each vessel.

Maersk has also informed its customers that they have taken into account the increase in navigation costs and have implemented changes to loading policies and fees.

This situation reflects the profound effects of escalating tensions in the region on the European maritime transport industry and may lead to further commercial costs over time.
